Tesla (TSLA, Financials) completed the first fully autonomous delivery of a Model Y vehicle from its factory to a customer's home, Chief Executive Elon Musk said Friday, calling it a major step in the company's efforts to commercialize self-driving technology.
The trip — completed across town without any human driver — was finalized one day ahead of schedule, Musk said in a statement posted on the company's internal channels and confirmed by Tesla.
The announcement follows growing investor focus on Tesla's autonomy plans, which have become central to the company's long-term strategy. The delivery also comes amid broader industry competition, with firms like Waymo, Cruise, and Apple rumored to be accelerating their own autonomous initiatives.
The Model Y, a compact SUV, is Tesla's best-selling vehicle and the primary test bed for its self-driving software stack.
