Meta Platforms Inc. (META, Financial) CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced a significant restructuring of the company's artificial intelligence (AI) division. This initiative focuses on developing "superintelligence," aiming to achieve or surpass human-level task performance.
According to an internal memo, Zuckerberg informed employees that Meta's AI operations will be consolidated under a new team named Meta Superintelligence Labs. This team will be led by Alexandr Wang, former CEO of startup Scale AI, whom Zuckerberg praised as a standout founder of his generation. Wang will assume the role of Chief AI Officer at Meta.
Nat Friedman, former CEO of Github, will collaborate with Wang to lead the team and oversee Meta's AI product and research efforts. Zuckerberg is personally involved in recruiting talent for the superintelligence team.
Zuckerberg emphasized the urgency of developing superintelligence as AI progresses rapidly, expressing his commitment to ensuring Meta's leadership in this new era of human advancement.
In addition to forming the new team, Zuckerberg announced the addition of 11 new hires in the AI field, including researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Notable team members include former DeepMind researcher Jack Rae and several OpenAI affiliates.
